Ajoelhara a negra suspirando
Postas as mãos, os labios contrahidos,
Diziam as canções dos seus gemidos
Mais do que os prantos com que estava olhando.
Camões fitava o espaço, meditando,
Bem longe o coração, longe os sentidos;
E de seus olhos, para a dôr nascidos,
As perolas caíam, deslisando.
Um queixume da negra, compungente,
Acordara o poeta, que sonhava
Com a patria querida e o amor ausente.
Ella co'os olhos n'elle comtemplava,
Elle co'os olhos n'ella era indifferente,
Que todo aquelle mal outra o causava.

NA VOLTA Á PATRIA
(SALVAÇÃO DOS LUSIADAS)
Cinzenta a côr do ceu, a noite baça,
O vento chora nas enxarcias, rude
Como grito plangente d'alaude,
Vibrado pelos dedos da desgraça.
Além nenhuma estrella então perpassa,
É o horisonte um lugubre athaude,
Fervem as ondas altas como açude
Que as torrentes ás agoas embaraça.
Vem da China o baixel desarvorado,
Sulcou o mar com soffrega vontade,
Até que o mar o fez despedaçado.
Sorrindo heroicamente á tempestade,
Paga o zelo maior do seu cuidado
Camões, salvando á patria a eternidade.

UM VERSO DE CAMÕES
Não desço agora á fria sepultura,
Não roubo á morte os pavidos segredos,
Não quero desfolhar com estes dedos
Do gelo a flôr de extranha formosura.
Não vou cingir na tua fronte pura,
Cheio de horror,--o labio e os olhos quedos,--
Por entre a noite e os tristes arvoredos,
D'uma fatal grinalda a eterna alvura.
Deixa que viva assim em treva absorto,
Cadaver, caminhando, tristemente,
Em demanda do meu perdido horto.
Já que ventura amor me não consente,
Que não recorde mais meu peito morto
Erros meus; má fortuna, amor ardente.

FLOR PERDIDA
Quando sorria a infancia docemente
Aos olhos infantis da minha esp'rança,
Era-me o ceu azul, azul bonança
Me enchia o alegre peito, ternamente.
Brilhante o espaço, a aurora transparente,
Brando o futuro se a illusão avança!...
Assim jámais o coração se cança,
Mostrando á nevoa fria um sol ardente.
Pastam os olhos meigos pelos prados,
Os astros rompem sempre vigorosos
As campinas do ceu, fortes arados.
E murcham sobre a campa luminosos
os lyrios! É que lembram, emigrados
Alegres campos, verdes, deleitosos.

Inveja a noite escura e tenebrosa
A negra côr do teu olhar vibrante,
Espelho d'alma triste e peito amante,
Imagem d'uma estrella radiosa.
O teu olhar de fogo!... É assombrosa
A luz que espalha ao de redor; distante
Se fôr um dia, caminheiro errante,
Que elle me enxuge a face lacrimosa.
Se além, na campa, os membros já cançados
Eu repoisar ao pé dos tristes lyrios
E dos funereos goivos delicados.
Pago serei então de meus martyrios,
Se, juncto a mim, teus olhos magoados
Forem-me, ali, os derradeiros cyrios.

Os olhos que me deram na existencia,
Com seu gentil fulgor de virgindade,
Umas vezes amor, outras saudade,
Renascendo-me a paz na consciencia;
Olhos cheios de vida e de innocencia,
Revivos de perfume e suavidade,
Olhos de tão formosa claridade
Que escurecem do ceu a transparencia;
Talvez sejam ainda os companheiros
Da melodia heroica de meu canto,
Meus amigos sinceros, verdadeiros.

O zephyro que, á tarde, vae de leve
Pelo norte a voar, abraça a neve,
Abraça a chamma um corpo que incendeia.
A hera abraça o tronco que, elevando
Os braços para o espaço, os entrelaça
No doce arfar da naturesa, brando.
O raio abraça o cedro que estilhaça,
A lua abraça o mar, se está brilhando,
Só o meu peito, amor, a não abraça!

VITA NUOVA
Senhora de minh'alma, a suavidade
Dos teus labios gentis tornou-me á vida;
Tinha a esperança morta e já perdida
E deu-lhe um beijo teu vitalidade.
Passou a dor mimosa da saudade,
Surgiu no oriente a aurora apetecida,
Brotou a flôr, ha muito emmurchecida,
A bella flôr d'alegre mocidade.
Agora canto o sol, as philomelas,
O vasto mar, as lucidas estrellas,
A noite escura e a branca luz da alva.
Lasaro resurgi da terra fria,
Abrindo o olhar já baço á luz do dia...

É assim como o rosto de Paulina,
Cruelmente por Nero perseguida,
Aquella flôr que estimo mais que a vida,
Flôr gentil de face purpurina.
Nas suas folhas leio a minha sina;
Talvez cheia d'amor, talvez florida
Renasça a fé, n'esta alma, dolorida,
D'aquella flôr á nota sibyllina.
Quando poisar d'ausencia o escuro manto
E se ouvir, n'uns timidos harpejos,
O meu remoto e solitario canto,
Ó brisas que passaes por estes brejos,
Estou a ungil-a com saudoso pranto
E a reanimal-a com ardentes beijos.

Neto de heroes vencido... ao abandono...

Se fôra rei daria o throno, a gloria,
A c'roa, o manto, a fama, a patria, a historia,
O paço, as cortesãs e o sceptro bello,

I
Eu não escalo as rochas de granito,

Passo a existencia, inerte e sem pensar.
Não sei se Deus existe, ou se é um mytho,
Imposto á crença para atormentar
Da humanidade o largo peito afflicto,
Em noites de negrume, sem luar.
Vivo n'uma anciedade indefinida,
Cheio de Raiva, ensanguentado e vil,
Sem mesmo comprehender o que é a vida,
Ai! talvez seja um lugubre covil,
Uma passagem horrenda e dolorida
D'um mundo mau a um outro mais gentil.

Talvez seja uma ponte arremessada
D'um nada a outro nada incomprehensivel,
Talvez seja uma nota não tangivel
Na harpa pelo Destino dedilhada.
A vida... talvez seja uma enseada,
Onde aporte, na furia inconcebivel

Noss'alma, sem timão, desarvorada.
Deixae livre correr a phantasia,

Que a morte, poderosa como o incendio,

ADORAÇÃO
Ouço dizer, ha muito, que a saudade
Aviva n'alma os grandes sentimentos,
Engrupando n'um só os pensamentos
Que se reunem, além, na immensidade.
Deixei-te um dia em triste soledade,
Parti, cheio de dor e de lamentos;
O pobre coração, entre tormentos
Luctando com raivosa anciedade.
Voltei tempo depois:--O sol raiava,
Sorria a primavera, e ostentava
O agreste breijo a perfumada flôr.
E ao ver-te, novamente, ó doce amante,
Disse a teus pés cahido e murmurante:
--Bemdicta a naturesa e o teu amor!

INSONDAVEL
Eternamente fria, inamovibel,
Materia alevantada á luz da vida,

Aos sonhos meus, á minha voz sentida,
